The Gift of an Ordinary Day

I work in the world of pediatric health and wellness, and I often fail to see the stressors that children work through every day. Sometimes it's because so many things go on at once. Sometimes, (like today, as I drove my son home from high school to study for more exams) it was because I didn't want to admit that I caused some of those stresses.

My son asked the night before to catch a ride to his CPR recert class for a summer job, and without thinking, I blurted out that school WAS his job. It should take total precedence over a summer volunteer job. Did the exam priority neede a little adjustment back to its rightful place at the top of the list? I was more than happy to help...

Not helpful, I was reminded by my husband this morning.

So I went back to the words of one of my favorite authors, Katrina Kenison, whose most recent book is The Gift of an Ordinary Day, ... to fill my bucket today. "Learn the art of letting go," she says.  "We can't change our children, but we can see the good in them - today."

I try hard as a DoctorMom to help my children create a balanced life. I feel it when we nail the balance...and when we don't.

For me, Kenison has so many gentle reminders that our health and well being come into focus every day with an appreciation of the balance, the gift of the every day ordinary. Each day is a chance to re-commit to these age old principles. I needed some encouragement today.  You too?  Enjoy the wisdom...
